Returning after a long absence

It has been a long time since I blogged on this site. Many thing have changed since I last blogged:
- I retired in 2017 from Bethel University from teaching nursing as a Assistant Professor
- On June 1, 2020 I underwent a 3 vessel open heart graft procedure which I am still in recovery.

These are two major life events which makes you look at life and death differently than before. My cardiac surgeon was a bit puzzled by why I wanted to know my on/off pump times during surgery. Most patients had not asked that question but I had seen open heart surgery, done IABP in surgery and on patient before surgery. So understand the reason to be "off pump" but so know that the total time is associated with a number of complications. It was reassuring that the time was reasonable and actually shorter that I thought. I have to remember how long ago was my experience and open heart has better techniques and technology that did not exist a few years ago.
Since this note I have a permanent pacemaker which is working well and doing well.

I am reading The Deepest Well: Healing and the long-term effects of childhood adversity by Dr. Nadine Burke Harris. It is worth the read especially if you have had a traumatic childhood.  After this summer and fall, you begin to look closer at your childhood and decisions you made along the journey of your life.

In this week, I will talk of safety of houses of worship for the Faith Community Nurses and legislation for the Greater Twin Cities ENA. Workplace violence and resiliency are two issues I am reading on right now.  It is interesting how both deal with the issue of being and feeling safe.
